at least my wedging tutorial came out alright I think

my window is literally about twenty feet from train tracks and a new train goes through every hour or so, and with few exceptions, the conductor hits the horn right as the train passes by. And since it’s so hot but the air won’t be on for another week at least, my window is always open.
Very unpleasant. :( I feel for those who live this close to busy railroad tracks year round.
why do I always watch Willard?
It’s like the only movie that consistently gives me sympathetic squirms and it’s just really sad and I hate feeling squirmy and sad
and yet I watch it all the fucking time
the truth is I actually am pretty interested in this job even though it’s with little kids. I’d get to spend my summer in New York (state), out in nature, and get paid to do art. Sounds like fun.
why do people who might give me money never answer the phone
wish me luck
My backpack is finally falling apart after seven long years of use. And if the Swiss army can’t make a good rucksack, who the hell can?
Plus, I mean, it looks fucking awesome.
But I’m going to hold off until I have money. I’ll be making ~$75 off of a restoration job I’m doing on the door of this guy’s refurbished safe; maybe I’ll dip into that and save the rest for gas…
I’m calling a potential employer tomorrow, on the advice of my ceramics prof. And I’m really bad at phone conversations.
One of my lovely customers sent me a message today with this link.

My heart sank a little bit. The World/United States of Love line that I created is one of the reasons that I was able to quit my full-time job. They even stole the…

I got quite a lot done in the studio today, but it doesn’t feel like it. I guess I only feel like I’ve done stuff if I wind up with ten new jars or something. But today I glazed a few jars, reorganized the shelves so a friend and I have more room for our pottery, and made a sample of a new clear glaze along with test tiles (because our current clear glaze looks like bloody jizz after it’s fired). I also threw a few mugs and a 2 part vase thing; the bottom is shaped like my jars, and the neck is sort of just straight up and down. I plan on trimming, carving, and connecting the parts when they dry a bit. until then, I wait.

He’s sayin’ that Fly Amanita would do the trick too, but ya still gotta be careful to not use too much. He’s also sayin’ you might want to prop up your head before you accidentally snap your neck. Which I agree with him on that.

you’re not. you’re just being pretty human.
I pity anyone who has to deal with feelings very often
it sounds exhausting
sometimes I feel like I’m 10x more mature than my peers, and yet I don’t feel like I’m mature myself
makes me worry for the future of the nation
these idiots I go to school with will be doctors and politicians and lawyers…
This is the second one of these I’ve seen.
Oh my god how do you people remember this sort of thing.
The similarity is totally on accident, by the way. That ‘bottle’ is just the easiest shape I can make, and the chartreuse is the best glaze my school has.
Do you guys make your own glaze? Because I could totally send you half a dozen glaze recipes that turn out magnificently every time. I mean, I love chartreuse, but it doesn’t work on everything.
I haven’t even asked how to use the slips yet, so I dunno. Probably, though it doesn’t matter so much— I’m being graded on whether I make the things I’m s’posed to, not on how pretty they are.
Chartreuse does SO work on everything.
But that basics tutorial you mentioned earlier is something I’d eat up in a second, if you ever found the time for it.

if you say so
but yeah, I’ll probably be off to the studio tomorrow or thursday night, and I could probably figure something out easy enough :) As for glazes, if you make your own, you likely have a glaze mixing area with trash cans and pickle jars full of things like Talc and Bone Ash and such, and the finished glazes will probably be in plastic trash bins as well. If you use premade glazes, they’ll most likely be in small labeled plastic jars. But if you make your own, I know a nice tenmoku recipe, and we have an excellent teal and red.
(Also in Deviantart flavor.)

That ‘bottle’ looks like one of those things from Antz.

Rick Santorum is aware that there are straight people who like gay porn and gay people who like straight porn, right? And that not all gay people watch porn, let alone gay porn?
and that, you know, porn doesn’t make people gay?
and that being gay is neither a mental illness nor wrong?
I just like to think that for every movie/series he dies in, his life expands of 5 years.
It just helps me cope.
Yesterday on twitter, I expressed annoyance with the hundreds of people who send me emails or tumblr messages or whatever to let me know that they illegally downloaded one of my books, as if they expect me to reply with my hearty congratulations that they are technologically sophisticated enough…
I wouldn’t have ever read your books if I hadn’t come across a free epub copy of it. I wouldn’t have borrowed it from the library but I did stumble across it on the internet - which lead me to reading it and then buying a physical copy from a book store. I hate to say it but I echo Neil Gaiman’s sentiments, that people who are pirating your work probably wouldn’t be buying it anyway. It does seem like it all comes down to money - not that I’m criticising that, it’s the way you make your living and you’re entitled to attempting to control how your work is distributed but out of those 50,000 copies or so that were downloaded, many of those copies probably weren’t even read, some would have just been flicked through, and there would have been a large number of people like me who downloaded it on a whim, then discovered they loved your writing - then bought all of your books. It is possibly adding to your profit margin in some regards.
For what it’s worth - books are extremely expensive in Australia. We usually pay around $30 for each book. If we order from overseas in attempt to get it cheaper, we are slogged with exorbitant shipping fees. That aside, not everyone works, not everyone has $10 to spare for a copy of your book, some people work so hard for that $10 so that they can feed their family. Sure, they could go to the library but it’s often more complex than that. What if these people were trialling your books so that they could see whether they liked it, so that they could save for a real copy? What if they simply couldn’t wait for their physical copy to arrive and just wanted a digital one in the meantime (library waiting lists for popular books are often up to a year long in Australia)? A huge number of those downloads could be people who already own the book and simply want to have a copy on their ereader also - they wouldn’t buy it anyway, so you’re not losing out. But you’re winning in a way, most of these uber fans are highlighting passages in their digital texts, posting them on tumblr which gains you new fans. That’s how I found your work, from someone who had copied a passage from a pirated copy of your book. Both that person and myself now have bought real copies.
It’s been hard for me to try and get my bearings on this issue as my partner works in an artistic industry himself and has often fought to get paid what he is entitled to. He’s had images of his used without permission, or reproduced or had people argue over the cost of his work.but in the end, he’s still making a living and there are always going to be some things out of one’s control. In the end, he’s still winning - he earns enough to support his family and sometimes the unethical use of his work gains him more business in the long run. The world works in crazy ways.
I am not saying any of this is right, hell- in the end, people should just buy your book. But there’s often more complex reasons behind piracy than people being douchebags. I really hope that the people who’ve read your post, who have pirated your work - buy your books if they are in the position to purchase them, or go to the library more often than they do. I know that if I ever publish a book, I’d hope that I still pull in significant enough sales to make a living too and I’d be crushed if people preferred to pirate rather than buy my work. But I’m also aware it’s a really complex issue and not entirely black and white.
For what it’s worth - I have bought thousands of books and am not a habitual pirater of ebooks. I buy physical copies. I am more than willing to stop illegally downloading the odd few that I do, it is illegal after all and I do wish to support the artists creating the work. I am entirely able to borrow from the library and am prepared to go on waiting lists if I have to. I just thought I’d offer some thoughts regarding those nasty nasty piraters that everyone is hating on, y’know?
I am aware that my thoughts on this could be not entirely correct, possibly even entirely wrong and I welcome calm, rational counter arguments. In the end, I guess it could be argued that people should just go to the library, if they have to wait to read the book, then so be it. If they don’t get to keep a copy forever to love and cherish, then so be it. And all those people that wouldn’t go to the library or have discovered you via piracy, then they can just not ever read your work. It’s only fair but it’s just a little bit sad.
I’m sorry for posting this AGAIN but it’s just such a good argument
I really don’t think people are pirating out of spite, sitting on a pile of cash and laughing at the author/artist/whatever. In most cases I really do think it boils down to availability. If a person has the money and the means to purchase an object they really want, they probably will. If they don’t have the money and means, they won’t. Does it matter much if the people who wouldn’t be spending money on the object anyway pirate it? I’d argue it would increase their chances of buying the object and related merchandise later, and increase publicity (word of mouth, and the download might elevate the file or torrent to a “Most Popular” or “Most Downloaded” list that would perpetuate the free advertising).
In the end, does it really make a difference? Should we punish those who can’t afford to buy a book but love to read, or should we be glad that the word is being spread?
It’s just a very complex subject that really affects me, as both a “pirate” and an artist, and I think this is a very enlightening dialogue. It poses an interesting contrast to Neil Gaiman’s experiment.
