For scale…these little guys are eating pieces of popcorn. so they are kinda small. In Thailand a lot of businesses have jars of these as they are considered good luck. sorry for the crappy pic….any idea?
My guess is that these guys are a species of darkling beetle. Darkling beetles are named for their dark color but can vary enormously in body shape between species. Many species thrive on grains like rice, flour, or corn, and some species from more arid regions can collect water from dew that sticks to their elytra (the hard “shell” covering their wings) and need little to no external water sources to survive.
correct me if I’m wrong, bug friends! Particularly you, drhoz- these guys live MUCH closer to you than me, so you’re more likely to have a related species in your neck of the woods.
I think i read on one of your posts that you’re into insects and such? I was wondering if you could give me your insight into the scientific name or any other name of some beetles i picked up in Thailand..you up to it?
Yes! I studied biology in college, with particular attention to insects. I can probably easily identify what families the beetles are in for you, but no promises on exact species. Beetles are the most diverse of the insects, accounting for over 1/3 of all named insect species. About one in four named animal species is a beetle!
Send me photos of them from above using a coin or ruler for scale and I’ll see what I can do :)

image won’t load for me but I think it’s safe to assume it’s either Jared Padalecki in a white suit or Mark Pelledreamo being wonderful
SLIM YOU HAVE BEEN HAVING A HARD TIME BUT. You are almost done with the gross emotionally draining things you have had to do! So I drew you a morale griffin.
omg snow I could cry manly tears thank you
ciarak submitted: hi I stumbled across some classic Herb Kāne art of Pele and thought of you hah
oh wow this is lovely, thank you ciara!
BY THEY WAY I GOT THAT BOOK YOUR TOLD ME ABOUT through interlibrary loan and plan on devouring it over Easter break
I read the first few pages, where the author is talking about why he wrote the book
I just wanted to say I really it love it when you go on little biology rants on posts; it makes me happy in my heart! Also I really appreciate that you have an interest in biology and art since most people think it’s a strange combination (I’m an art (photography) major and a bio minor and people think that’s weird). That’s it form me and I hope you’re doing well!
oh goodness, thank you!
I WASN’T DONE YET TUMBLR WHY DID YOU POST
anyway I was just gonna say it’s good to see another artist/biologist out there! I always get the weird looks because of it too, esp. when I was doing my bio minor. I would be in the upper level microbiology and behavior classes and people would be totally cool with me until they found out I was “The Art Major” and then suddenly I was just some amateur to all but a handful of them.
I came to your page to cast my vote for you to the side of Ravenclaw (though I can def. see super cunning as well, I think proportionally I see you exercising information and knowledge/learnings more frequently), but then I got distracted by the absolute glory that is your Biden cats. Oh my lands when did that happen they are /the best thing/
Thanks man! Yeah, I could totally see myself as a Ravenclaw. Or a Slytherin, but like you said, I act more the part of a Ravenclaw most of the time (I’m just not as crazy ambitious as your typical Slytherin, I think). And I could see Gryffindor, but eh, not as much as Ravenclaw or Slytherin. I really cannot see myself as a Hufflepuff, and not because I dislike the house or think it’s stupid- I just don’t fit.
The Biden cats happened slightly before election day, around the same time as my first Biden icon. :P I keep thinking about changing them back/to something else but I really love the weird faces Joe Biden makes.
It happened this morning when I was talking about The Great Wave Off Kanagawa.
can’t help but feel this is a little unfair. My parents don’t expect me to know the makes and models of say, iconic tractors, even though they’re both mechanics and my dad works at a tractor repair place and we live on a farm.
